The history of Moena
The history of Moena

The history of Moena

The area of Moena Municipality has always been the junction between the Fiemme Valley and the Fassa Valley, and this position has contributed to mould the characteristics of its community.

The ancient name of the town, "Moyena", refers to a marshy district, and tradition has it that an ancient lake on the valley floor dried up, as shown in the 19th-century coat of arms.

After the Rhaetian War (15 B.C.), the area of Moena witnessed the enlargement of the Roman Empire to the Adige Valley and to the Dolomites area, which gave origin to the Rhaeto-Romance or Ladin language.

After the reinstatement of the Habsburg supremacy, the age-old independence of the rural Communities was reduced to a dim recollection.

Trentino Alto Adige Region

Trentino Alto Adige is a region full of  tourist resorts such as Moena and of Hotels for summer and winter holidays in the Dolomites.

The area of the Trentino region is almost completely inhabited by Italian-speaking people and also by some ancient German-speaking communities (Mocheni and Cimbri), whereas the Alto Adige region is mainly inhabited by German-speaking people and by a huge Italian-speaking minority (35% in the past, 25% nowadays). The Ladin-speaking minority is also present in the Trentino-Alto Adige region. The so-called Ladinia also includes a part of the Veneto region area and consists of 5 valleys:  the Gardena Valley (BZ), the Badia Valley (BZ), the Fassa Valley (TN), Livinallongo del Col di Lana (BL) and Ampezzo (BL).

The Badia Valley and the Gardena Valley are completely inhabited by Ladin-speaking people. Ladin is a thorough neo-Latin language. Each valley is characterized by its own variety of the language, and varieties are often very different from one another. This posed a great obstacle for the cultural and linguistic development of the area; therefore a standard language was created (Standard Ladin) by putting together the common and the most similar characteristics of the different Ladin varieties, following the model for Romansh language in the Swiss Canton of Grisons.
